Moderation - A Principle to Live By
What is moderation? Moderation is 'the avoidance of excess or extremes...' as said by Oxford Languages. This principle is vital due to its diverse applications and benefits, which we'll be exploring in this blog post.
Prevents Burnout – Overworking or excessive discipline leads to exhaustion, reducing long-term productivity and well-being. Utilizing moderation ensures that you don't stress too much, leading to better overall mental health, which also shows in your physical health.
For example, if you're a student, you can probably relate to saying that school doesn't let you live and that you feel burnt out - in reality, you're probably the one who isn't letting yourself live, because you can't find a balance between school responsibilities and personal commitments.
Fosters Mental Clarity – Extreme thinking clouds judgment, while moderation fosters open-mindedness, ensuring a balance between passivity and stubbornness.
For example, if somebody doesn't agree with your opinions on political controversy, you listen to their point of view and logically deduct whether it's valid or not rather than emotionally reacting, to ensure your perspective has taken others into consideration and you have valid counterarguments.
Encourages Mindfulness – Practicing moderation helps individuals make thoughtful decisions rather than being ruled by impulses or excess. It is key to practice moderation when it comes to making decisions, to ensure you do not make hasty or poorly thought-out ones.
For example, when you're choosing which coffee to buy at a cafe. You would want to ensure you don't spend too much and end up wasting money, nor too less so as to not give yourself the gratification you need/deserve.
Maintains Physical Health – Extreme eating habits (overeating or excessive dieting) can lead to health issues, while a balanced diet ensures proper nutrition. Similarly, too much physical exertion can lead to health issues too, which is why we need to balance our efforts.
For example, regular, balanced meals and a sustainable workout routine lead to long-term health benefits rather than crash diets or overexertion.
Promotes Sustainable Success – Extreme efforts can bring temporary results, but consistent, moderate effort leads to long-term growth and stability.
For example, your grades - you don't just need determination to get good grades, you need consistency. You must make sure you review what you've covered so far monthly, if not weekly, for your concepts to be clear and your burden to be less. This also helps prevent burnout.
Strengthens Relationships – Overdependence or complete detachment can harm relationships. Moderation in attention and effort keeps them healthy and fulfilling.
For example, being completely nonchalant in a relationship is not desirable, as it seems you do not care. On the other hand, you shouldn't be on your knees, either. Preserve your worth and your dignity. Keep it moderate - know your worth but still care enough. A person who truly loves you will want that for you.
Prevents Addiction & Overindulgence – Whether in food, social media, or materialism, moderation protects from excessive dependence on unhealthy habits.
For example, spending hours scrolling through social media can be damaging, just as completely avoiding digital interaction might be impractical. Moderating screen time ensures a healthy relationship with technology.
Balances Freedom & Discipline – Too much freedom can lead to recklessness, while excessive discipline can feel restrictive. Moderation ensures a healthy balance.
For example, imagine you're the new principal of a school. It is important to ensure that students stay disciplined but still have a sense of freedom, so forcing them to walk in lines when they're simply trying to go downstairs to the basement would not be the wisest decision, as it evokes a dystopian feeling and can lead to resentment from said students. (This is totally not based on personal experience :) )
Creates a Harmonious Life – Moderation leads to inner peace, avoiding the highs and lows of extreme behaviors. Being too lax will lead to your downfall, but being too stuck up will lead to unnecessary stress. Moderation regarding this, and all other aspects of your life, will ultimately give you a better sense of inner peace, as you ensure that you don't fall into the throes of extremism.
Take winter and summer, for example. I don't know about you, but where I'm from, the temperatures in these two seasons are extreme. Which is why fall and spring are much more preferable. They're moderate, and they're much more beautiful. The same can be said about how you lead your life - if you utilize moderation, your life's seasons could be something as beautiful as spring or fall.
In conclusion, moderation is key when it comes to life since it ensures a balance. If you gave a chair only two legs, it obviously wouldn't be able to stay up because it isn't balanced. You need to balance both sides by giving it two more legs. This metaphor can be used in multiple aspects of your life, which is why moderation is so important - it provides stability. Its significance lies in the fact that it leads to long-term well-being, happiness, and success. This is your sign to start developing this marvelous mindset <3
